The Torture of my Uncle Steven
(My uncle spent 5 years in a death camp. His only sin: he emigrated001
to Yugoslavia. Read the story in my book: www.hegyipublications.com "Journey to the big woorld")

Uncle István described the tortures he received in the basement cells at the AVH headquarters in Budapest.
  • He spent nights bare-footed in a cell that had water running through it with rats swimming around.
  •    Beatings with rubber batons until he became unconscious
  •   Two or three policemen would kick him with boots when he was tackled down to the floor until he passed out
  •  Standing naked in a small cell and if he leaned on a wall, would receive a painful electric shock
  •  Shoving salt into his mouth then was forced to drink water from the toilet bowl
  •  Going without food for days
  • Going without sleep for many nights and days
  •  Being handcuffed and in leg irons for several days and nights.

Fellow prisoners included former communist leaders, intellectuals, writers, farmers, labourers and priests. The guards used to brag about the treatment that was especially designed by Rákosi for priests. After sever beatings, a priest would be given a crucifix to kiss. But, the crucifix was charged with electricity and sometimes the doze was big enough to electrocute the priest.
The torture was to get false confession that he was an agent of the foreign imperialists and Tito (My uncle escaped to Yugoslavia but a border guard handed him back to Hungary).   When he could not take the pain anymore, then he signed a confession that he could not even read because his eyes were too swollen from the beatings.
He was then taken to the labour camp at Recsk which was also called death camp. There, the purpose was to torture prisoners on a continuous basis. He said the first day he was taken outside to work in below freezing temperatures and when he tripped and fell in the snow in from of one of the guards, the guard stepped on his bare hands with his spiked boots, twisted his leg until blood was pouring out of his hand. He had to tear off a piece from his shirt to bandage the hand so that he could continue working without gloves.
Uncle István told us how determined he was in surviving, even though the AVH guards kept telling him that this is a death camp, you are here to suffer and die as soon as you are too weak to work. So he kept up his strength, besides working in the quarry he did push ups and other exercises. When he came home he did not fit into the riding boots that he was wearing before his internment because of the increased leg muscles.
As we listened to uncle István (Pista bácsi) I was getting increasingly angry at the communists who would be that cruel and inhumane to another human being. That feeling of wanting revenge came back again, but the time was not right.
But, after the revolution, the time was right to leave Hungary.

English is a delightful language
Read the story from my book: www.hegyipublications.com

Some interesting uses of the English language occur in Church Bulletins. “The Fasting & Prayer Conference includes meals”.
“The sermon this morning: Jesus Walks on Water. The sermon tonight: Searching for Jesus”.
“Ladies, don't forget the rummage sale. It's a chance to get rid of those things not worth keeping around the house. Bring your husbands”
“Don't let worry kill you off - let the Church help”.
“Miss Charlene Mason sang 'I will not pass this way again,' giving obvious pleasure to the congregation”.
“At the evening service tonight, the sermon topic will be 'What Is Hell?' Come early and listen to our choir practice”.
“This evening at 7 PM there will be a hymn singing in the park across from the Church. Bring a blanket and come prepared to sin”.
“Low Self Esteem Support Group will meet Thursday at 7 PM. Please use the back door”.
“Weight Watchers will meet at 7 PM at the First Presbyterian Church.  Please use large double door at the side entrance”.
“The Associate Minister unveiled the church's new tithing campaign slogan last Sunday: 'I Upped My Pledge - Up Yours’.”
Promotional slogans can also confuse people who are trying to learn the language. Recently I saw this sign on a restaurant attached to a gas station: “Kids with gas eat free”.
I found oxymoron expressions to be the most challenging to understand when I was learning English. Expressions such as: “jumbo shrimp”, “death benefits”, and “open secret” can be confusing when you are trying to master the language.

Still, English is a delightful language. Even with misuses, accents, double meanings and other challenges, we manage to understand each other.

At the beginning
Read the story from my book: www.hegyipublications.com "If it wasn't for Celibacy, I would have been a Priest"

At the beginning, God created the Heavens and the Earth and populated the Earth with broccoli, cauliflower, spinach and Hungarian paprika. So that Man and Woman would live healthy lives.
Satan, being jealous of God’s goodness, created creamy ice cream, fast food donuts and milkshakes. And Satan said to Man and Woman: “you want coffee with that?” Man said “yes” and woman said “make it double-double for me”. They gained 10 lbs and Satan smiled.
God seeing this, offered Man and Woman a healthier alternative: yogurt so that woman can keep the figure that Man found so pleasing. But Satan brought forth white flower, sugar and chocolate-rich desert. And Woman went from size 6 to 14.
Now, God offered again a healthier alternative to Man and Woman and said: “try my fresh green salad”. But Satan was determined to win the battle with God so he created Thousand Island dressing, buttery croutons, and garlic toast on the side. And Man and Woman unfastened the belt following the feast.
Then, God created running shoes so that His children might lose those extra pounds. But Satan was quick to the draw and invented cable TV with remote control. Man and woman gained more weight!
Then, God brought forth the potato, low in fat and full of nutrition. But Satan peeled the healthy skin and sliced the starchy center into chips and deep fried them. And Man and Woman gained more weight!
God then created lean beef so that Man and Woman might consume fewer calories and still satisfy their appetite. Satan responded by creating double cheeseburger and deep fried chicken. He then said to Man and Woman: “do you want fries with that, too?” Man said “yes”. Satan smiled and Man went into cardiac arrest.

God sighed and created quadruple bypass surgery. Satan responded by creating long line-ups in hospitals and medical centres…

The Stroke - That Changed my Life

Read my struggle for recovery. When the stroke hit me, I was in a coma for 4 weeks and when I got my senses back, I was paralysed on my right side and spoke only 20 words in English and Hungarian. BUT I recovered, or almost...
