In 1974 my parents were saying in their letters that
some of the people who left Hungary in 1956 went home for
a visit and as long as they did not discuss politics, they were
able to leave again. So in June 1974 Rose and I decided to
visit my parents with the children. When we landed in Budapest and saw the soldiers with machine guns around the plane and inside the airport, I
was having second thoughts about the visit. My sister
Annuska and her husband Tibor were waiting for us at the
airport, but I didn’t recognize her at first. She was 11 years
old when I left and since that time, I only saw pictures of
her. As we came out from the secure area, a young lady
was steering at me, then came over and said: “I am waiting
for my brother who is coming from Canada with 3 children.
Since you are the only family arriving with 3 children, you
must be my brother”.
